2 out of 5 stars Online access dysfunctional and book inaccurate   January 13, 2006
12 out of 12 found this review helpful

I really wanted to like this product and had high hopes for its usefulness but the book has been revised in such a fashion that it is relatively unhelpful compared to older editions.

I think they want to steer users to the online component, which I am much in favor of.

Regretably, I had a great deal of trouble using the access code included with the book, and found writers market's customer service non-responsive.

The enrollment email I received "confirming" my free 1 year membership features no less than 4 links that do not work (such as FAQs, contact info, etc. for Writersmarket.com) and when I login it tells me my account needs renewal.

In short, they really dont have their act together online, it seems kludgy and poorly managed. So add up an out of date and limited book with dysfunctional web products and you have a major disappointment.

I will go back to my older editions of the book--while out of date at least the basic info is there. And I won't buy again from writersmarket. Too bad, they were quite a good resource once.

5 out of 5 stars A Vital Tool for Any Serious Writer   January 4, 2006

We've been reviewing the annual Writer's Market guides for many years now and every year we find new features in the guide that make it even better.

This year is no exception.

The 2006 Writer's Market marks the 85th edition of the annual guide. This year's edition contains 4,000 listings for book publishers, literary agents, contests and awards, maagazines and more.

Each listing contains complete contact information, current needs, recent titles published, pay rates and even tips on how to break into that particular publishing house or magazine. Writers who want to see their work in print know all of this information is absolutely crucial to achieving your writing goals.

Even though all of the publishing listings could stand on their own, Writer's Market also deals with the business side of writing through helpful articles. From how much to charge to handling your online PR, there are a number of articles and even interviews with other successful authors and writers to give you that extra boost in your career.

We rely on the 1,000-plus pages of information as writers ourselves and simply don't know how any serious writer could survive without it.

Every year's Writer's Market listings are 100-percent updated. With submission needs changing and even contact people shuffling on to other venues, it's vital you have the current year's edition to reach the right agents, editors and publishers looking for your work.

5 out of 5 stars Should be Called "The Writer's Bible"   January 15, 2006

In 1997, I sold my very first article to EEO Bimonthly magazine using Writer's Market. The description of the magazine in WM was so thorough that I didn't even need to read the magazine before pitching it! I've continued to buy this directory every year since then -- and I've now written for more than 120 magazines.

Though these days I normally find high-paying markets by browsing the newsstands and through word-of-mouth, I use Writer's Market to find these publications' Web sites, phone numbers, and addresses. I've also used the book to find markets for my reprints.

The online version of WM is also very helpful, as it allows you to narrow your search by various criteria, such as magazines that accept reprints. The online version is also updated fairly often.

One caveat: Editors move around so quickly that by the time the print WM hits the stands, many of the editors may have moved on to different publications. I suggest using Writer's Market to find a potential market's phone number, then calling to find the name of the correct editor to pitch.

5 out of 5 stars Must-Have for Every Writer...   September 5, 2005

If you are a writer, or WANT to be a writer...this book is for you. It tells you where to sell your stuff, with thousands of listings, and also gives you good advice on current market rates as well as writing tips. I've bought one every year that I've been in freelance, and will continue to do so.

For instance, if you have an idea for a magazine article, you can search alphabetically or categorically for the best places to query, and that listing will include contact information, how to get a sample copy, departments and sections of the publication, how much they pay, and what they're looking for. Most publications also include some helpful hints like, "we don't want this type of piece," or "break in with this type of piece."

You can't go wrong. Buy this RIGHT NOW.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better   October 21, 2005

Not as up to date like the older versions, the popular magazines have no contact info. Should just buy the 2003 edition.
