Unlike most reviewers, I won't take time to tell you what this book is about. Read the book. It does a far better job than I can.
Instead, let me tell you why you should read this book. If you are serious about writing and want to be taken seriously, this book is for you. James Scott Bell writes clearly and to the point. Everything in this book is practical to a fault. The sixteen or so dollars it costs will be far better spent on it than the hundreds paid to some critiquing service!
How I wish I read and applied the tips Bell gives before submitting my first query letter. It would have save me a lot of grief and embarassment.
If you can only buy one writing book ... February 15, 2005 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Can't afford a pricey writer's conference? Do family responsibilities keep you from traveling? No problem. James Scott Bell's latest book is the perfect solution. Like a week-long writing course, Bell covers it all in easy-to-read chapters. From the Top 20 Ways to Get Hundreds of Plot Ideas to Stretching the Tension, I'd recommend Plot & Structure to beginning writers for its soup-to-nuts approach, but it's also a must-read for veterans. The advice is timeless.

Someone's review said that you shouldn't read this before bed. So true. My head was spinning until 2:00 in the morning re-structuring my plot. I wrote and re-wrote pieces of my novel under the night light. And I'm only at the beginning of this book. Thank you, Mr. Bell.
Worth every cent June 1, 2007 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
An excellent title if you want to know the tricks and techniques needed to grab hold of a reader and not let them go until the final pages of your novel. It's all here, from plotting techniques to structuring your scenes for maximum impact.
I'm a published author with three titles in print and yet I still buy and read how-to books, because I believe you should never stop learning. Many of these books are boring rehashes of obvious information, but Bell has just the right combination of enthusiasm and knowledge. You want to keep reading, but you also want to set the book aside and apply some of the techniques right away.
Packed full and Concise! July 26, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This book has been a red-pill type of read for me. It contains in such a small amount of text, the tools that successful novelists utilize to create great plots. JSB does an excellent job of not only presenting examples from familiar stuff (e.g. "the shining," "star wars," "midnight"..etc) but he's masterful in conveying the mechanics that inspire interest in the reader. The only con here is that it's hard for me to simply enjoy a movie or hear/read a good story now without considering the concepts explained in this text (hence the red pill.) I can live with that I suppose.. This is a very enriching read, worth checking out.
