1 out of 5 stars funky thumb-index tabs   October 22, 2003

I found the books placement of tabs made them almost useless. I know why Merriam-Webster doesn't advertise the fact that there is a thumb-index. I was told that they started using an automated system in 1978 because it was cheaper. I guess you get what you pay for, a cheap dictionary. I say if you are going to insert thumb-index tabs put them in the right place... at the start of the letter being indicated, not somewhere in the middle. What's that all about?

5 out of 5 stars This is the reference !   June 16, 2005

I am a student at University and English is my second language. I choosed this dictionnary because it has so much information about words. From pronunciation to origin of the words while giving rules and exceptions....everything is there.

It is more than a traditionnal dictionnary. With it, natives from US or other English speaking countries as well as people learning the language will get everything on their hands. The CD included is very easy to use and so useful when working on a computer. The search engine is powerful and you get at leat 10 options on how to look for words or expressions.

Beware, however, this is not an encyclopedia dictionnary. There are only a few B/W pictures. This is a book to have all the infos about words, not objects. Very complete... I love it !

5 out of 5 stars Great American dictionary but no need to upgrade   December 16, 2003

Merriam-Webster is the gold standard for American dictionaries with one of the best team of lexicographers in the world. This eleventh edition has 10,000 new words but you do not need it if you have the tenth edition. Most of the slang words (bling-bling, etc.) are already passe' in the circles that they are used in. The new words from the technical fields will not be of much use to you (you probably already have a specialist's dictionary if you need to know what they mean). I have the tenth and it will suit me fine until another ten years go by and the 12th edition comes out.

5 out of 5 stars It's the desk-sized dictionary of reference for American English.   March 25, 2006

For years I used an earlier edition of this dictionary in my work as a copy editor. Now I'm an English teacher and have got the 11th on my desk. I'm going to try to persuade my bosses that every incoming student should be required to buy this dictionary upon arrival at our school, unless already in possession of a copy. Far too many students today, at all levels, are strangers to the use of reference books. We need to make sure that people go on not just _knowing how_ to use them, but _seeing value_ in their daily use. A good dictionary is the fundamental one. The OED and the American Heritage have their virtues, but if all of my students and colleagues were bound to have only one dictionary on their desks, and if I got to choose it, it'd be this one.

5 out of 5 stars A great product for a very good price   September 21, 2005

I found this dictionary really well written, even some more of what I expected. The Geographic and Biographic sections are very useful and in other dictionaries are missing. The number of pages is pretty good, and the definitions are complete and clear. The only little flaw I can recollect is the use of pronunciation notes different from the usual standard. The etimologies are a very interesting plus as well as the usage notes. Not to mention the wonderful and solid cover.. a very good purchase...hard to regret, and the price is really good too.
