2 out of 5 stars Idiot's guide to writing your dissertation   January 3, 2007

That might have been a better title... The Idiot's Guide to Writing Your Dissertation... yes you idiot.

The point is that this text is extremely simple. Good advice, but for true starters. If you have never written something serious, you need to read this, but if you have... skip it.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks of a systematic approach   January 28, 2000

I am starting my dissertation and being the first time I have to make a thesis, I simply had no idea on how to star, this book encourages you to write but don't explain how to make the research and what is expected from your dissertation, so I would simply say the books is very good for everybody who is trying to write anything but a dissertation.

In the last few weeks I have been spending more time reading about writing a dissertation than actually writing one. Bolker's book broke it down in simple steps and clearly articulated the fears and struggles we face as writers. I laughed several times as I saw myself in her observations and started writing as soon as I put the book down.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for Ph.D. Candidates   June 27, 2003

This is a quick read that provides some of the best advice on controlling and writing the dissertation that I've seen. Much of the advice Bolker provides seems common sense but I've known few graduate students to use it without a guide like this. Applying her suggestions for writing and organizing will get you done with less agony.

This book helped me cope with the issues blocking my progress on my dissertation. I finally felt like I wasn't alone! I developed some good strategies to overcome what everyone who has to work and live and love and write a dissertation all at the same time faces.
