Dissertation Cheerleading October 1, 2004 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was hoping this book would offer insight into a mysterious, terrifying process. It has some helpful information, but is mostly fluff. I read the book in a couple of hours. I walked away with some hints (write every day, met regularly with your advisor)but nothing earth-shattering. I wouldn't buy it again or recommend the purchase. I threw it away after reading it.
A nice book for getting started on your thesis/dissertation. August 11, 2000 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I am in the process of writing a master's thesis and purchased this book to see if it can help me overcome the (initial) inertia. The best advice I got from the book was "Write first". Of course, that's what everybody has told me for a long time, but Bolker's advice on realistic expectations (atleast in the beginning) and not being perfectionistic are good ways to get started. It would have been useful if she had included information for science and engineering students (like me), but the content is good as it is. It would be a good idea to revise the book with more information on word processing and other computer related information. I finished this book very quickly and as I mentioned, I keep reminding to myself "Write first" whenever I get struck on something.
A disappointed PhD student May 22, 2002 10 out of 26 found this review helpful
Dissertation writers need a systematic approach of how to construct the dissertation and advice on how to do the critical writing not just writing tips that are designed for high school students. 15 minutes of writing is good for a student that has not been involved in writing at all. How could author expect a PhD student to write the dissertation in 15 minutes a day? Is it a joke? Dissertation needs structure as well as a systematic approach for doing literature review and critical thinking. It certainly cannot be messy as the author suggested. However, it will be messy if PhD student does not have the dissertation at the end of the term. As a new PhD student, I am extremely disappointed that this book had no original contribution and did not provide anything that I did not know about dissertation writing.
A lifesaver for the pains of academic writing February 19, 2005 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Bolker's book was a lifesaver for me while writing my M.A. thesis. Writing is a painful process, and Bolker is kind and wise as well as realistic in the advise she gives. Bolker offers techniques for the writing process and for the editing process that are invaluable to a stuck writer. She has much empathy for the psychological processes involved and gives helpful direction in this area as well. This is a wonderful book and I feel lucky I could benefit from the wide experience of it's writer.
It helped me turn in a thesis July 13, 2000 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Joan Bolker's book can be a very big help for those people like me who have ten different things going on at once, one of which is a long-term paper. I bought this to help me complete my Master's thesis on the recommendation of a few people.I credit this book with helping me prioritize things when it came time for the actual writing of the paper. The 15 minutes a day title is a little bit deceptive, however. The program does not necessarily amount to 15 minutes per day strictly. And, that can be unrealistic anyway. I had actually tried a regimen like that before. But, while it can work for awhile, it can be very difficult to maintain depending on one's work schedule or environment. The biggest help in the book for me (and why I rate it somewhat highly) is that it helped me establish a workable scheudule with my professor. I ended offering some suggestions to my professor as to how often we discussed the paper, etc., and it worked out nicely for both of us. I think when it comes down to it, you can examine the information in this book but tailor it to what your professor expects. I can say that Bolker's book helped me in eventually turning in my Master's thesis. But, keep in mind that 98% of thesis work (particularly while having a demanding work schedule) is going to be one's own determination and commitment. And, this book is not going to provide that for you!
