2 out of 5 stars Does not live upto the expectations   February 14, 2004

I bought this book after reading the reviews here. I expected in depth analysis of each strengths and possibly tips on how to build up on to those strengths and all I got was a short descrition of top 5 strengths and nothing more. Most of the book is about the theory that using one's strengths is better than overcoming one's weaknesses. The book had been much better if only a chapter or two were devoted to it and rest were left for an in-depth analysis of those strengths. If you can get hold of the code off the jacket of the book and take the test online, then the book is worthless.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT INFORMATION AND ADVICE   April 9, 2001

Having a lifetime of experience as a teacher and counsellor of business management and a background in psychology, I find this to be an excellent book, on the same level as the book, "First Break All the Rules". Believe me, Gallup has good reason from both a logical and psychological point of view why the quiz found here cannot be taken a second time. It is also a known fact that once individuals take a test for the first time, they often tailor their answers to fit the questions the second time around.

It is a major plus, particularly in business, to expand your knowledge by studying psychology. After all, business is all about dealing with people, i.e., customers, employees, suppliers, competitors. If you do not understand people from a psychological point of view, their patterns and behavioural characteristics, you are already at a disadvantage. You can bet "the big guys at the top" know all about their competition, their customers, their employees, and what makes them tick from a psychological viewpoint. They have already done their homework and that is one of the major reasons why they have made it to the top of the corporate ladder.

The only reason this book seems to be deserving of a four-star rating rather than a five, is simply because of the theory, "Concentrate on your talents, not you weaknesses." While it is correct to say one should concentrate on their talents, it is equally important to identify weaknesses. There is a timeless business philosophy that holds much truth - "Know what you don't know." Those tasks that you do not do well, should be delegated to someone who does excel in that area. If you are the only person in the business, and the jack-of-all-trades, then you better learn "what you do not know" very quickly or you will have an extremely short-lived business venture.

This book contains some strong, valid points which can be applied to both your business and personal life and, overall, is well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Gifts, Skills, and Preferences--All Three   September 14, 2001

Buy the book! A code found on the book jacket that lets you take the StrengthsFinder insturment, and print out the results and supporting documentation is worth the price of the book.

As you read through the interpretation material, you will discover a bias in the research with which you may agree or disagree. I had both feelings simultaneously. The StrengthsFinder was incredibly accurate for me personally. However, being a professional survey, questionnaire, and inventory taker, I found that I could guess the answers that fit my self-perception.

I highly regard a complex way of considering human personality that allows for a deep level of individuality. This complex way looks at gifts, skills, and preferences. Therefore, I find that-like all instruments-the StrengthsFinder is inadequate alone for making holistic life decisions.

Even so, finding your strengths can mean finding lasting satistfaction in your field. So this book, the instrument, and the interpretation of each strength will help you focus yourself.

I also found helpful a section that talked about how to have a strengths-focused organization.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile New Framework On Your Self   April 12, 2003
16 out of 21 found this review helpful

"Now, Discover Your Strengths" is a refreshing break from the standard Myers-Briggs evaluation of your personality. Instead of the old Introvert-Extravert, Thinking-Perceiving, etc. framework we've all enjoyed, here we have 34 different themes to identify our strengths. Examples are Discipline, Fairness, Analytical, Competition, Learner, Strategic, and Futuristic. By discovering which themes resonate with your own strengths, you can determine what sort of work you should be doing.

As a person who enjoys reading about personality profiling, I've been through quite a bit of material. This book may well be my favorite, even over the classic "Do What You Are."

Your book will come with a code that allows you to take the test online, which is a nice bonus and works much better than having to mark up your copy and turn pages to figure out a score.

1 out of 5 stars Another fad self-help book   June 1, 2006

I read Now, Discover Your Strengths today, and took the "StrengthsFinder" quiz. Circuit City is in love with this book, and they give a copy to every employee.

Of the five "themes" which ostensibly are my strongest talents, two are correct, one is so-so, and two are absurdly wrong.

Like most personality tests and fad self-help books, this one is 30% common sense, 30% BS, and 40% a sales pitch for the publisher's other products. Don't waste your time.
