5 out of 5 stars An excellent companion reference.   August 5, 1999

The Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications is an excellent companion to a more traditional Manual, such as the Chicago Guide. The work is well written in an easy-to-read format, using clear, concise language. The accompanying CD is a terrific addition, as it provides a way to read the manual in a quick, online manner. The e-book Microsoft Press Computer Dictionary is a great bonus.

1 out of 5 stars Useless for anyone outside of Microsoft   July 27, 1999

This book reads like an intenal Microsoft document written to assist their tech writers write Microsoft manuals. Too Microsoft-centric. If you want to write tech manuals for Microsoft or manuals that feature Microsoft products and functions and want to follow all of Microsoft's style guidelines, then this book is great. For the rest of the world, useless.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise - No Better Way to Put It   January 20, 1999

I agree with "A reader , April 30, 1997." Microsoft doesn't have to share its style guide with the world, but I'm glad they did. Sure, this is not a bible or a book of rules, but it gets you through when you're at a loss for words. The definitions they use reflect standard and common usage. Isn't that the way we all want to write? Clear and concise, no better way to put it.

4 out of 5 stars Hey! They had the time and budget to do it. Leverage it!   May 1, 1997

You know that you and your team need to improve the situation regarding your style book. But who can actually do it? Right! In the spare minute and a half between intense projects? No, you wouldn't want MS to define even more of your writing life than WORD already has. However, if you can all just agree to this easy to use book as a default, your lives will become a little less contentious. Ahhhhhhh..

5 out of 5 stars Who knew there was a correct way to refer to your Macintosh?   June 22, 2001

If you do documentation or technical writing for a living, this is an essential. All too often, we are guilty of using adjectives and nouns as verbs. This book provides detailed assistance in how to use a word properly. I write documentation that is published on the WWW so my audience is very broad. I cannot afford stylistic slip-ups. This book can help you avoid them.

Note: This should not be assumed to be a replacement for a standard grammar and usage book such as a Gregg Manual. It should be used to augment standard style and grammar works.
