5 out of 5 stars A Technical Writer's best friend!   October 19, 1999

Let me say straight up that I'm not a Microsoft promoter. So this book really had to work hard to make me a fan.

I write and edit technical documentation and have found this book a great reference for terms of reference. I may not agree with some of the references, but the definitions are written clearly and concisely. Many provide examples for unmistakeable clarity.

One of the best resources available for technical publications.

5 out of 5 stars A 'bible' of essential information   December 12, 2004
6 out of 7 found this review helpful

Technical writers, journalists, editors and any who write about computer technology or employ content for worldwide audiences will find this newly updated and expanded third edition of Microsoft Manual Of Style For Technical Publications to be a 'bible' of essential information covering everything from how to write better documentation supporting web sites to knowing standards for accessible communications. This could have been featured in our computer books section but any involved in the modern literary world should have it too: it covers the basics of how to optimize computer-based writing systems and addresses all the common style problems along the way.

1 out of 5 stars Common Practices: Yes -- Style: F'gettit   June 26, 2006
6 out of 10 found this review helpful

Considering that this book is written by a technical writer for technical writers, it shows poor quality writing. Split infinitives, passive voice, and generally poor style abound.

The primary function of this book is to list common practices for technical writing, with a few limited style recommendations. For example, explain why the user should do something before you tell them what to do. "To see more detailed information, select Help."

The value of the book lies exclusively in enumerating common practices. For that reason, buy it. Then prepare to grind your teeth as you wade through horrible writing.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource, but...   April 11, 2000

I bought the first version years ago, and this latest version as soon as it came out. Nearly every technical writing friend who has seen it on my desk immediately went out and bought a copy. I probably use it two to three times a week to look something up or to settle an argument.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!   January 26, 2000

This book is a great reference manual for all technical writers; entry-level or experienced. It answers many, many questions without wasting the reader's time. It's very well organized and definitely worth the price of the book. I'd highly recommend this for technical writers. It's a must have for any technical library, but it won't stay sitting on the shelf long!
