2 out of 5 stars Bad exercises   May 25, 2005
13 out of 32 found this review helpful

The exercises in the book seem to be purposefully difficult. Is this to discourage prospective copyeditors or so that Einsohn can show off her years of experience? In order to be instructional, the explanations should fully cover the concepts that one will be tested on in the exercises. Anyone who can read should be able to read the text and then successfully complete the exercises. This is basic to good instructional design. Instead, in the exercises, Einsohn throws in the exceptions to the rules or tests on concepts only hinted at in the text. Einsohn reminds me of the bad teachers we have all experienced at one time or another who get satisfaction from confusing students by talking around a subject instead of teaching the subject directly. Success of students is not the goal of these teachers. There are many finer points in copyediting, but there are sets of rules governing them all. It should be a simple matter to present the rules and then test the student on those rules.

5 out of 5 stars Best of its Kind   December 16, 2002

I'm a bit of of a writer's book junkie. Certain rules of grammar never seem to stick and other rules are quickly forgotten if I don't keep up. "The Copyeditor's Handbook" is the most comprehensive and useful book of its kind that I have found. The writing is engaging, the excercises helpful, and the range of information covered is impressive. This belongs on every copywriter and copyeditor's reference shelf.

1 out of 5 stars A clear waste of money.   May 9, 2004

This was one of the most difficult books I have ever read. I wish I had not ordered it as it was not helpful to me. I would not recommend this book to anyone as the wording is very advanced and not for everyone. Extremely condescending! It's clearly not for a beginner or someone who is trying to start out in the business with little or no experience. I was hoping the book would help me with my career change, but it did nothing but throw my money away.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for copy editors   March 8, 2007

A copy editor does not need much else besides this book. Not only is it full of those mechanical issues that trip up even good writers, but this book also offers practical suggestions for approaching copy editing job (especially important for the newbie in the field). This is an extremely user friendly book, including quick reference charts, many examples, and practice exercises.
