3 out of 5 stars Mixed Review   March 9, 2007
5 out of 14 found this review helpful

I had to buy this book for an editing class I'm taking at school. It's a nice book to look at--they've done a great job with the layout--and the sections you need really aren't that hard to find. The thing that I can't understand is who made the University of Chicago the all-powerful English prescriptivists? I realize that there needs to be uniformity in writing (a lot of it, probably), and I recognize that Chicago does allow for some flexibility of choice in certain areas, but I think it is often too nit-picky. Maybe that's just because I don't understand the rules very well or I don't have any real-life editing experience. My feelings about it are very mixed. Sorry I don't have much of a definitive review, but I will say that I loved when another professor of mine saw me with the book and told me "That is a book I refuse to open!"

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Style Guide   March 16, 2006

The interior of the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style is clean and easy to read. It feels almost light and breezy. I wasn't opposed to the heavy scholastic look of the 14th edition, but this is nice too. Chicago is the definitive style guide for publishers and authors, no question about it.

5 out of 5 stars Old School It May Be, This Is A Treasure Trove Of Excellence   March 22, 2006

On the back of the Chicago Manual Of Style-it reads, " The indispensable reference for ALL who work with words" I couldn't have said it better myself. This is the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual Of Style, and does offer some new material that will truly help and please the writer in all of us.I just cannot stress the IMPORTANCE of this book. Test it out, and you'll see what I mean. This 15th edition of the "Chicago Manual Of Style" is worth forking over the cash, but what a good reference book it is. Even if you have older editions of this book, seriously consider purchasing The 15th Edition Of The Chicago Manual Of Style. You will not be disapointed. I promise.

5 out of 5 stars IF THIS IS SO USEFUL, WHY DO ITS EBULLIENT REVIEWERS WALLOW BREATHLESSLY IN ANCIENT CLICHES?   August 3, 2006

The necessary desk reference, right next to your enormous dictionaries and historico-literal references weighing down your writing desk.

The CD-ROM version released in 9/2006, but like my dictionaries, I want a big book I can have and hold like a dearly beloved lover whose barely hidden wisdom I may browse through finding previously unseen delights, not another software program with which to do battle. Yet this is a sternly consistent lover, with unbending bars about your candid creative dove. But, hey, you do want to get published or perish, right?

5 out of 5 stars Call Me Old Fashioned, but I LOVE This Book   September 1, 2006

If you work in the literary world, it drives you nuts on a daily basis to see how few writers bother to check for accuracy when it comes to using quotes, italics, or underlining in their manuscripts; how few know when to use single quotes or double quotes--don't get me started. Suffice it to say, this is the book to consult. Though there are a half dozen style books, you can't go wrong using Chicago!
