4 out of 5 stars Writing - not Methodology   July 30, 2005
15 out of 18 found this review helpful

This book is not about research methodology (as one may initially think), but about how to write reports in a more efficient and convincing manner. To wit, the authors are from English and Literature Depts. Yet, considering that scientists often stumble in good communication, this book turns out to be very useful in exercising one's logical and writing skills. It includes "tip" pages at the end of each chapter. International students will find this book to be particularly very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful!   December 21, 1998

This book is a must at any stage of research for students (and professors) of all levels. The book offers examples from diverse disciplines (English, Chemistry, Sociology) and offers advice applicable to all fields. It's an incredibly simple read. Some parts are less useful than others, but overall, the publication is very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for students (and others!)   May 26, 2001

This book will fill in all the gaps about research that your professors assume you already know. Clear and concise, it lays out best practice for this essential scholarly skill without academic hyperbole. It's also oddly reassuring in its tone. The writers/professors admit that they've made some embarrassing mistakes in their own research -- and have lived to tell the tale. They emphasize that good research skills are not necessarily innate, but that they can be learned and applied. Just an invaluable resource - highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!   January 18, 1999

To me it was easy. Before read this book a lot of my scientific papers were regret by editors... After read it, I got three accepted manuscrips!!! (one in a top journal). I think that the ideas in this book improve my write skills.

3 out of 5 stars Not excellent, but decent.   April 21, 2003

I can't say that I was bowled over by this book, but I think a beginner would find it very helpful. The only really good critique I can give of this book is that it is not for the intermediate to expert researcher. Most will find it a bit pedestrian and very basic. To the beginner or the novice I think this book would be a very valuable tool. Buy it for a freshman in college before the go to school, they will be able to use it and it will help them.
