5 out of 5 stars My favourite reference book   November 4, 2005

I acquired my first Merriam Webster's dictionary when I was 17. It was completely by chance, because at that time I didn't know much about reference books. It has followed me through my English studies (English is not my first language), I've translated hundreds of pages using it instead of a bilingual dictionary, and it has always been reliable, up-to-date and fun to use. I am an English teacher now, I have used many other dictionaries of similar kind, but none of them ever matched my Merriam Webster. Now I have the eleventh edition with CD, which means I'm starting my own collection of the Collegiate series.I'd recommend it to everyone because it's exhaustive but simple to use at the same time. Not many other dictionaries can match it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent American dictionary!   July 20, 2005

When I first received this dictionary, I was surprised that it wasn't a huge, hulking beast. I used to own a giant dictionary when I was a kid, and I was hoping this would be the same. I was surprised, however, to find that the pages were very, very thin, and the number of entries was quite complete. A larger dictionary would probably not be handled well by my children anyway. The most important part is the content. It has entries for lots of obscure terms now in use in American media, like "dotcom". My family and I are very satisfied with this purchase, and our older dictionaries will be now be donated to a thrift store.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary at a reasonable price   November 10, 2006

I keep a hard copy dictionary on my desk when I need greater specificity than typically found on the Internet. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition) provides strong word coverage, multiple meanings with clear examples of grammatical and contextual usage and definitions of newer social, political and technological terms and expressions. Practical information is offered in the appendices that include foreign terms and phrases, geographical places, grammatical handbook of style, signs and symbols and personalities. I find the font easy to read. I'm pleased with the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Some things I miss   August 31, 2005

M-S Collegiate Dictionary has always been my favorite - and continues to be (while I would dearly love a full edition of the Oxford I wouldn't know where to put it all!). However, I use my dictionary mainly for the most challenging crossword after I've given up on my brain alone. I miss the "Abbreviations and Symbols for Chemical Elements" in the 11th Edition that was included in the previous ones (yes, I know they are included throughout the main body). And, I miss the "Colleges and Universities" that used to be in the editions before the 10th. Also, the contents do not list that the "Pronunciation Symbols" are on the inside back page; in fact in two places. Those nitpicks being mentioned, the MWCD is always a great value and solid resource.

5 out of 5 stars Reliable Resource   March 13, 2006

Despite its size, I keep my Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary handy and use it often when I meet a word I don't know. I moved recently because of Hurricane Rita and discarded the old copy of the M-W dictionary that I had used for many years. As soon as I was settled in my new home, I wanted to purchase a new dictionary. My only choice: a new edition of the "old faithful one" that I had used for many years.
I also appreciate the extras in the back of the book...geographical names, biographical info, etc.
