Online Learning Center for Everyone--It's About Time! February 19, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've owned this book and the 6th edition; the only difference there was modernizing photos and translations. I found the book very useful, but I would like to see more transitions as one subject in a chapter changes to the next subject. If you have an instructor who transitions well, you won't have any problems. Going it alone, however, leaves you spending unnecessary time figuring out how to get from A to B. Still, especially if you have the workbook--you NEED the workbook no matter what--you'll learn well. I'm thrilled to finally be able to get full access to a website with a used book--it's my favorite part of the whole thing!

This is my favorite text book for Spanish that I've had. It has an extensive glossary in the back and explains the new grammer concepts exceptionally well. I love it!
This is a decent book. December 14, 2006 My university's Spanish 1 class uses this text and found it to be quite good. But I must add that your final opinion of this book will differ depending on how you like to learn.
The authors use the "immersion" method, which is seeing a recent resurgence in the world of teaching foreign languages. The early parts of the book depend heavily on English cognates, or words that are similar between English and Spanish. For example, they challenge you to guess at the meaning of Spanish phrases based on the simple Spanish information they provide and the English you already know. This approach can be very powerful for native English speakers, but naturally discriminates against non-native English speakers; especially native speakers of non-European languages.
We cover half the book in one quarter (10 weeks) so the pace is fast. I found the glossary to be lacking most of the time, but is far better than in other texts. The information is generally well presented and focuses on allowing the reader to communicate verbally in Spanish as soon as possible. This is a great motivational tool for the beginning learner. Conversationally, the book does have some holes, but they are of minor consequence. There are some discontinuities with the accompanying workbook, which I hope the editors with address in a future edition.
Required Textbook April 11, 2007 I would like to see a spanish book with more explanation between english and spanish. Most books rely on pictures for translation and this book follows the same model. I guess it will serve the purpose, however.
