Product Description Most people think that beauty revolves around such things as lipstick, sweet eyes, or skinny jeans -- all those things that we can see (and obsess over) in the mirror. But the fact is that beauty isn't some superficial pursuit, and it's not some random act that you can thank (or curse) your ancestors for. There are, in fact, scientific standards to beauty. Beauty is purposeful, because it's how humans have historically communicated who we are to potential mates. Beauty, in fact, is really about your health and happiness. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Michael F. Roizen and Dr. Mehmet C. Oz bust the myths and stereotypes about the way we view ourselves -- and how we define beauty. In these pages, you'll find out why beauty isn't as much about your vanity as it is about your humanity. The doctors take a scientific, informative, and entertaining look at the three levels of beauty and explain how they all work together to form a complete and authentic YOU. Those three levels of beauty are: - Looking Beautiful: Your appearance influences your self-esteem and has major health implications. Here, the docs will tell you how you can look the way you want.
- Feeling Beautiful: So what if you have luscious lips or gorgeous locks if your joints creak and you have the energy of a rug? The docs will tell you how to improve your energy levels, beat back your life-altering aches and pains, and come to grips with some of life's toughest stresses.
- Being Beautiful: By improving your relationships with your loved ones as well as with others, you'll be well on your way to finding true happiness. That's the ultimate goal: Having all three levels of beauty working together so you can have a happy and healthy life.
You'll start off by taking the ultra-revealing and validated YOU-Q Test to help you assess where you are on your own beauty scale and where you want to be. Take the test, see how well you do; then use the book to help you improve your score. With their usual candor and honesty, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz break down the mechanics of beauty and explain how little adjustments in your routine can help you become a happier, healthier person. You will learn about the biology of beauty, take YOU Tests to determine where you are on the beauty scale, get tons of YOU Tips to help you improve your life, as well as learn the secrets of the Ultimate Beautiful Day. From hair to toenails, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz go through every part of your body to explain how different foods, vitamins, creams, gels, and injections can really boost your looks. They scrutinize the beauty myths that bombard us every day and offer an unbiased perspective on which ones cause more harm than good. You will be able to revamp your beauty regimen (or start a new one from scratch). They'll also take a close look at chronic pain, mood swings, low energy, and financial stresses. And they'll dive into the science of building relationships, finding happiness, and using spirituality to help you define your own levels of true beauty. Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz act as tour guides navigating the tricky but exciting terrain of today's beauty industry. YOU: Being Beautiful is your all-inclusive ticket into the world -- the real world -- of beauty.

Feeling beautiful already November 12, 2008 88 out of 124 found this review helpful
I'm a fan of the authors and have read all of their books. What I enjoyed most about this one is that it targets beauty from three essential angles. They show you how to look beautiful, feel beautiful, and even BE beautiful. As you might expect, they offer a ton of test and tips to help you work on all your beauty areas from your hair, to your skin, your teeth, and so on.
Physician authors Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz show us that beauty is a biological science available to any health-conscious woman. They teach true hair-to-toenails beauty that considers every facet of our well-being. The authors focus on what foods, vitamins, gels, creams, and injections can really boost your looks -- and mind-set.
They provide tools, tips and quizzes on physical appearance-caring for hair, skin, nails, teeth, etc.; forming healthy diet and exercise habits; reading labels and selecting products; and choosing cosmetic enhancements (breast implants, Botox, tattoos, piercing and LASIK, for example). They also include practical ways to manage energy levels, ease aches and pains, prevent injury, cope with mood disorders, end addictions and create positive home and work environments. Identifying work and finances as major stressors and loving relationships as key to health and happiness, they offer insights and suggestions for developing a big-picture, spiritualized view of life. A 24-hour "ultimate beautiful day" shows how to implement changes into your typical schedule.
Another book I very strongly recommend because I've enjoyed it immensely and have made some major improvements to my inner beauty since reading it is The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book
Too Much Fluff, Not Enough Meat November 23, 2008 35 out of 60 found this review helpful
Despite the book's claims and attempts to appear like a revolutionary and scientific breakthrough, there's nothing in these pages that you couldn't pick up from a middle school health class.
Most of the book's contents are sheer fluff. It begins with a quiz designed to rate how beautiful you feel. It's entirely pointless in that the results tell you what you already know ("You want to make changes" - well duh, that's why you bought the book in the first place), and the results are never utilized further. There are further 'quizzes' of this type scattered throughout the book, all of them just as meaningless and time-wasting as the first.
The pages are chock-full of other such 'factoids' that have little bearing on self-esteem or beauty. Did you want to know the mating habits of lions? You'll read about it here, for entirely unfathomable reasons other than to make you glad you're not a lioness. The information presented is insultingly simple, and you don't need to pay ANY amount of money to have someone tell you 'washing your hair will improve your beauty! IT'S TRUE!' or 'if your teeth are flat, then you probably grind your teeth!' What's worse are the scattered recommendations that ARE NOT scientifically proven, and fully admitted to.
One such example is the discussion of aromatherapy, where one section warns against using products that arouse allergic reactions. But in the very next set of paragraphs, they recommend using lavendar and peppermint scents (saying that there's no scientific proof as to their effectiveness, they just 'like' them), when a large percentage of people are biologically allergic to lavendar.
There are countless 'witticisms' and attempts to be funny that drown out any possibly useful tidbits (and believe me, there's only a scant handful if that), with unhelpful footnotes that only lead you to yet more crappy jokes. The 'helpful' diagrams depicting the scenario at hand are loaded down with more of this tripe; apparently they thought it was necessary to include an anteater in the woman's uterus to suck up the you-know-what, along with a duck swimming in the bladder. Why? I! DON'T! KNOW!
Don't waste your money on this garbage. Unless you have no real concept about the importance of bathing regularly and need to be told how to wash your face, all you'll be buying is common sense laced heavily with painful failed attempts at wit.
Beauty- Inside vs. Outside- Transform Your Perceptions with this Awesome Read! December 19, 2008 15 out of 29 found this review helpful
This fascinating, introspective book, "You: Being Beautiful- The Owner's Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty" has the distinction of being both an interesting read, as well as a valuable medical resource, as the authors Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. are also licensed physicians. Therefore, while reading their book, you attain insights on how to achieve well being and inner satisfaction, while knowing that their medical insights are documented and researched based on their respective professional experiences.
The authors include interesting chapters and ideas on how simply taking care of your body, and making healthy lifestyle choices can effect the way you feel about yourself, and consequently the way others `see' you. They discuss the importance of oral hygiene, daily exercise, and my personal favorite- `how to save your hair'! The emphasis on physical beauty is balanced by chapters on emotional wellness and developing satisfying relationships with the close family members and friends in your life.
Additionally, two of my favorite authors, Ariel and Shya Kane have written an inspiring book on discovering how to have a great life by simply being there and being yourself. In "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life" the Kanes question the relevance of physical beauty over internal wellness. Will losing that extra five pounds really make you feel beautiful? Will that new hairstyle add satisfaction to the way you interact with your life? Instead of spending your life in turmoil while you `work on' the next best thing' the Kanes suggest you simply look within you own being- exactly the way you are in the current moment- and celebrate what is already within you. I have worked with Ariel and Shya Kane in their Monday Night Alive and weekend workshops in New York City, and I'm grateful that their wisdom and approach to life has truly transformed my own definition of the word `beauty'. Check out their books, workshops, and Internet radio show at transformationmadeeasy.com
For great insights and a new approach to going for your life, I suggest you put these books on your holiday wish list, pronto!
Beauty From the Inside Out December 13, 2008 12 out of 25 found this review helpful
I really recommend this book! It approaches beauty from such a holistic angle, addressing the typical things we associate with the commerce side of beauty, but focussing on how inner beauty really impacts outer beauty. Drs. Oz and Roizen look in depth at many things that make a person feel fulfilled, satisfied, and loved, and talk about the science behind how these feelings translate into what we call 'an inner glow.' They point out that beauty literally comes as much from affection, exercise, and balance (lack of stress, happiness, being of service, building relationships in one's world) as from moisturizer or products for your hair, because the body actually creates its own natural versions of these cosmetic applications when it is well taken care of, including being nourished with affection and balance. I have to recommend two of the most wonderful books to read in conjunction with You Being Beautiful: Ariel and Shya Kane's Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. These authors write beautifully about how to take care of your self esteem by not working on yourself anymore (it IS possible!), and how to take care of your community by turning your attention to being of service to others. These books illuminate exactly what You Being Beautiful suggests in terms of finding a state of inner nourishment and happiness. Please check out all three of these great books!
Beauty Advice from Men? No, thanks. November 11, 2008 11 out of 62 found this review helpful
Sorry, but I think these authors should stay in their lane of expertise. If you want their health advice, there are other YOU books that cover that.
