Effective Introduction to Latin December 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is our first year into an adventure of home schooling. Our son loves learning Latin with the help of this brilliant book along with the author's freely downloadable mp3 audio files. These recordings teach both classical and ecclesiastical pronunciations. Each lesson has its corresponding and very effective audio commentary. I suspect one of the secrets of the author's method are small and easily digestible increments of knowledge a child experiences from one lesson to another, with an effective dose of repetition of previously learned material. We are looking forward to the author's next book - Getting Started with Spanish.
BRILLIANT!!! December 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We are a home school family, and I thought it is really important for children to learn a second language and we had decided that we wanted them to learn Latin, the mother of many languages (well, I wanted to learn it, too ;]). I researched and contemplated many curricula until I found this book and read its reviews. The reviews convinced me to give this a try, and I am so happy that I did! It has been invaluable to our school and my sons can't wait to do it - and what child is excited about opening up a boring looking, black-print book with no pictures? Well, if that book is Getting Started with Latin they will. Each day we write the lesson's word on colored flashcards so that verbs and their conjugations, nouns and their conjugations, adverbs, etc. are sorted among the same color and we mix them up to create our own sentences. Yesterday was "The sailors are often carrying a woman and a notebook" :]. My 4 year old can tell me he is a farmer and a poet! We have been using this for about 4 months, and at learning only 1 thing a day - whether it is a grammar pointer, phrase or word - has easily and effectively built our vocabulary and we are all able to retain what we learned the first week we started. It is amazing to watch my oldest son see where we get words like "constellation", "agriculture", "spectator", "number" etc. - and he sees this all on his own. I am excited to learn a new language myself, but I am more impressed that my children are excited about it and enjoy it. It has helped me to have a better understanding of our vocabulary. On the author's website, you are able to download both the classical and ecclesiastical pronunciations of every single lesson in this book. For free. We are Mr. Linney's #1 fan!
Great for the self learner November 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great resource for those, like me, who want to learn Latin for their own enjoyment. This book starts with one conjugation, uses it until it almost becomes second nature and then builds on it. For noun cases it introduces one at a time with simple explanations. There is a lot to learn in this book--simple but not simplistic. About a third of the way through I notice that my translation of the exercises becomes almost automatic.
If you want to learn Latin this is a great starting resource.
An excellent book for starting out November 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I completely agree with the other reviewers. Prof. Linney's book is an excellent starter for those who want to learn Latin and have no background in the language. I started three months ago and I have completed all the exercises in book. Prof. Linney's website, which has the same name as the text, also has some excellent resources to assist in pronunciation of Latin words.
I am now starting his course which uses the text "My first year of Latin", by Gunnison & Harley
Brilliant November 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We are a homeschool family that has been using this book for about 6 months. I had taken some Latin in high school but I was nervous about teaching. My children are 8 and 6 years old and the 8 year old has an impressive grasp of Latin thanks to the format of this book. We can do a lesson per day and it is not at all overwhelming and there is plenty of review so that nothing is lost. We have begun to supplement our studies with )]]Minimus Pupil's Book: Starting out in Latin (Minimus) and .Fairy Tales in Latin: Fabulae Mirabiles (Language Instruction). This is purely because of the confidence and interest that Getting Started With Latin has inspired. We are eagerly awaiting Getting Started with Spanish which is currently in the works!
