Worst S&S I've listened to July 24, 2005 6 out of 12 found this review helpful
I wish someone else had reviewed this before me. I'm sure I wouldn't have wasted so much money on it. The speaker reads in almost a monotone, and the content didn't relate to anything we covered in my Professional Responsibility class. I can't recommend these CDs at all, but still gave two stars because it's possible that they could relate to someone else's class content.
Wonderfully thorough January 22, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This Sum & Substance set on Ethics is wonderfully thorough with interesting examples and case descriptions. I have come back to this set multiple times for my ethics class in law school, the MPRE, and the bar exam.
There are two potential drawbacks though: First, Professor Dzienkowski is soft-spoken and speaks in a soothing monotone. It makes staying alert a bit harder. Second, the set is probably too thorough. However, the tracks are split up by topic, unlike the Legends series, and it is fairly easy to tailor your listening.
Minus one star for Professor Dzienkowski's voice. Otherwise, it's a great set.
Great material, but lousy presentation December 30, 2008 I cannot believe John S. Dzienkowski makes a living _speaking_ on PR. His cadence is slow. Eventually, I imported the CDs into iTunes for my own personal use. I used a script to increase the speed to 1.5X through QuickTime. At this speed, he was perfectly intelligible and not speaking too fast. Think about it. This man is slow. Plus, he misspeaks words, paraphrases by repeating the same words for a sentence in a different order [usually keeping the same/correct meaning ;-) ].
So why on Earth, do I give the CDs four stars. He covers all the ABA Model Rules for Ethics 2000 and the 2003/2004 amendments that you need for a PR course or the MPRE -- often reading the rules verbatim. He covers relevant Judicial Canon and earlier than Ethics 2000 ABA rules; and classic case law. He organizes the material into about 20 topics, e.g., "Fee" material is presented altogether from a variety of sources in one topic, which is a very effective teaching structure.
BTW, I took the MPRE a month before finishing my PR course and passed with a score well above 125. I credit these CDs and the BarBri practice questions with helping me get that high score. The CD material is great, but I simply could not give "mumble mouth" five stars.
