5 out of 5 stars Very practical book   December 23, 2008
I saw Lily give a presentation at the Council for Excellence in Government in Washington, DC. I really enjoyed her presentation and purchased her book. I thought the advice was very practical and usable. I used her suggestion about putting together a portfolio to give interviewers--I'm a regulations writer and put together a portfolio with a copy of a powerpoint briefing I gave on rulemaking, a copy of some regulations I worked on, and a copy of a policy memo I wrote. I went on an interview for a detail and brought the portfolio. When the interviewer mentioned giving briefings, I was able to show her the powerpoint briefing. Also, the policy memo caught her eye because she liked its formatting. The accompanying CD is very practical also. It had great suggestions for questions to ask an interviewer. By using some of the questions she mentioned, I was able to find out information about the position and the culture of the office that I probably wouldn't have otherwise discovered. All in all, I felt very prepared with the help of Lily's book, and the interview went very well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource For Federal Job Hunters!!   December 18, 2008
I was already two years into a federal job hunt when I came across this book. It offers some great tips and advice on things I learned during my "trial by fire" phase of federal job hunting. If I had this book 2 years ago, I believe my federal job search would have been more fruitful. While I have obtained a federal position, using my own "know-how", I am using this book to get a much better one, as it helps me navigate the cumbersome processes involved in seeking federal employment opportunities. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone seriously seeking federal job opportunities that want to increase their likelihood of getting a job with the government. I think it's such a great book that I'll be purchasing it as a Christmas gift to many federal job seekers in my own social circle. EXCELLENT RESOURCE! Well worth the price! :)

Lily spoke at a career event in DC just days after her book came out. Impressed, I bought the book to help me with my first application for a federal job. She really knows her stuff and her book - and DVD - are loaded with tips, examples, formats... everything you need to navigate the process and produce a compelling application. Her book is a tremendously valuable resource for me and my career future.

5 out of 5 stars Good resource for all job-seekers   November 3, 2008

I found this book to be of great value even though I used it in the hunt for a good position in the civilian world and not within the government.
A friend in the "G" gave me a copy of this book and told me that it was "hilarious." Granted, Ms. Whiteman has some funny cartoons in it and her style is an easy read. But more importantly, gave me the get-up-and-go attitude to put on my game face and apply for jobs with more than a modicum of confidence.
The book comes with a CD of resume templates and other useful cheat sheets, if you will. It helped me get my career organized in a tidy, presentable fashion. It also inspired me to produce some attention-grabbing cover letters that conveyed my skills persuasively and attractively in my application packets. After studying it, too, I felt that I was prepared for interviews, or I was after I conducted the practice sessions that she suggests where someone sits and asks you potential questions. It makes you think on your feet!
"How to Land a Top-Paying Federal Job" made a world of difference in helping me stay away from vague and long-winded answers and I was finally able to connect with prospective employers, including the one that actually hired me just last week. Whew.
I would really recommend this book to any harried jobseeker, whether they want to work for the government or a company. And I plan on using it again in my efforts to move up in the world for an even better position down the road.
