The judge cares about evidence, so YOU MUST TOO February 4, 2006 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Too often, parents expect common sense and justice to prevail in a family law courtroom. By the time they learn their lesson, it's too late, and there's no "do over".
This book does an excellent job outlining a few critical areas for parents facing child custody litigation:
1. Not all evidence is relevant or important. It's important to learn what matters.
2. Attorneys are frequently overburdened and won't build your case for you, unless you have a ton of money. It's important for you to lead the process on building your case, with the assistance of your attorney (not the other way around). Then, the attorney can effectively argue your case in court.
3. Judges don't make decisions based upon kharma, common sense conclusions, or on a parent's assurance that she/he is better. Judges make decisions on evidence-based arguments.
If you don't master those three areas, your chances of prevailing are drastically reduced.
For the area of child custody conflict that deals with building your case-- this book does an excellent job.
It's not the "be all, end all" guide for child custody, but it serves a critical area; just as its title implies.
Hard hitting style, packed with practical information May 4, 2005 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
The author pulls no punches in this book. It is hard hitting and packed with practical information. Mr. White writes about a "combat strategy." This perhaps cold, emotionless plan is intended to present the case based on fact, not emotion. Most importantly, a case based on fact and documentation will make sense to the judge. The book also lots of tips on how to "win over" a judge or other people that are key to a successful outcome in your case. If a reader is willing to apply this information, it will position them to win a child custody case, when the evidence supports them. Guy White also uses numerous real life examples of "how to" and "how not to" handle the many complex situations surrounding estranged spouse relationships as it relates to child custody. These crazy stories are real people and real situations in cases he has handled or become familiar with. Some stories are pretty wild and make for some interesting reading. It is like "Reality TV" in book form. While his writing style takes a little getting use to. I quickly found the abundance of good practical knowledge overcame any criticisms one may have. He writes like a guy would talk to a friend, over a beer, giving it to you straight, without any frills, focused on getting his point across in plain English. I truly appreciate how the author is always reminding readers the importance of keeping focused on what is best for the children, rather than their own agenda, as many parents do. This book is the "The Child Custody Handbook" for parents who truly have their children's best interest in mind.
Like any survival handbook, it is a good read that you hope you will never need.
Really the Best One Out There December 15, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book spells out EXACTLY what you need to know in a custody battle, in a simple, straight-forward style. We got information from this book that even our lawyer didn't tell us. I bought several child custody books, but this is the one we turned to over and over again, and it is now dog-eared and worn. The author doesn't sugar-coat anything, but it's not like some of the doom-and-glooom books that make the situation seem hopeless. I would recommend this book for an informative read when facing a child custody dispute.
