1 out of 5 stars If You Don't Do It Well, Don't Attempt To Sell It   January 25, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

Let me begin with giving credit for an A+ effort and taking the challenge of being an Owner of a Publishing Company as well as an Author.

While I enjoy books from Triple Crown Publications from 2003 - 2007, the constant typo's/errors/inaccuracies within the published books are distracting if not annoying and inappropriate.

There is not one book I've read published by Triple Crown that doesn't have AT LEAST 10 obvious errors.

Which brings me to: How does one attempt to sell me a book about how to publish books professionally yet is not practicing what is being preached? Perfect your craft, hire better editors/proofreaders to ensure you are delivering quality work and stop focusing on pumping out quantity. I've read books dating back to 2003 by Triple Crown. Which means you have branded Triple Crown in a negative fashion by not correcting this problem for at least the last four. Hence, your confirmation of acceptance of mediocre work being stamped as a job well done. Is that what you've worked so hard to achieve? I safely assume not. Even if you feel successful at the publishing game, imagine how much of an even greater success the organization would be if you crossed all your 't's and dotted all your i's. Demand a better scope of work from your team as your name is associated with errors - just something to consider.

I am a PR professional and Talent Manager with 3 Authors as clients. I'd never refer my clients to Triple Crown due to SO MANY errors in the books for over years now.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the Grind of Self-Publishing   June 4, 2007

On a regular basis, I have new authors ask about how to break into publishing their story. I always say write your novel and get back to me. Some say that is harsh, well you can't get a book published if you don't have it on paper. Anyway, to the book at hand...

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THE PUBLISHING GAME is an amazing resource for the person with that raw manuscript on paper. Stringer and McPherson offer sound advise and clear steps towards publishing. The information is presented in a conversational tone with motivational tips to keep you pressing toward completion. The chapter's focus on what to do once the book is written. Most of all you need to define self-publishing and discuss the pros and cons of the business. Once you decide that self-publishing is your avenue of choice you have to "get the dough", set up your company, and have timelines for production, distribution, marketing and adverting. By the time your finished "best selling" book is delivered to your doorstep, the book grind really begins.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THE PUBLISHING GAME is a powerful tool for new authors. You can learn from the stories that Stringer provides on how she got her million-dollar ending. They say it is most profitable to learn from those that came up like you and Stringer fits that bill. If you are considering publishing your first book, this is a MUST READ guide on your road to BESTSELLER!

3 out of 5 stars General info, but still worth adding to collection   May 24, 2007
I am not that big a fan of street lit (even though this isn't street lit, I still think of it as such because it is published by Triple Crown) so it was hard for me to pick this title up and read it without judging the content of the other books she has published. But after realizing she is successful in the publishing industry for a reason, I knew I needed to add this book to my library. It is not as detailed as I would have liked. She actually glosses over the details and gives a very general overview of the business. Still, its information that everyone who is interested in publishing should know. There are more detailed books out there about the (self) publishing industry but again, you can't deny there is something about Ms. Stringer.

2 out of 5 stars Stringer should probably stick to publishing...   May 15, 2007
... and leave the writing to the pros. I bought Gavin Sinclair's book and this one at the same time and Sinclair's book is head and shoulders above this one. Stringer's book reminded me of something that might have been appropriate for 6th graders, not serious authors looking for a manual on self-publishing. I've also read her novel "Let that be the reason" and let's just say publishing might be her calling...

5 out of 5 stars Tips, Secrets and More!   April 4, 2007
How to Succeed in the Publishing Game is a book that not only reveals Stringer's secret to success, but also offers many tips and techniques not found in the traditional publishing books. She instructs the reader on how to be creative; how to get grants and funding; essential networking and in-kind services. Stringer also provides many samples and plenty of first-hand information. This is one of the best down-to-earth instruction guides that I have read!
