5 out of 5 stars Notebook Know-How is a Gem   June 30, 2005

Notebook Know-How: Strategies for the Writer's Notebook is a useful resource for teachers new to notebooks or seasoned veterans. The author, Aimee Buckner, really takes the reader on a journey of the writer's notebook with easy-to-use strategies that are as sound as can be. Always bringing us back to trusting the writing will come and it won't always be good. Really it won't. The part on assessment is inspiring. I really found myself thinking about my own teaching, how I use notebooks, and how I might do it all better. Her writing is magic in how it creates a map of flexibility and specificity without ever preaching. Ralph Fletcher got it right: "That's the best kind of teacher renewal I can imagine." I concur.

5 out of 5 stars If you have writing workshop in your classroom---read this book!!!   February 21, 2006

This is a wonderful resource that doesn't read like a reference book. The ideas for keeping the notebook going are easy to implement and helps to show you how to use the notebook as a tool in the writing process. It is obvious that Ralph Fletcher is a mentor to Aimee because her book is a wealth of information which is written in the laid back way of Ralph. I enjoyed reading this book and have recommended to many other teachers.

Notebook Know-How: Strategies For The Writer's Notebook by elementary school classroom teacher Aimee Buckner is an encouraging guide for writers wanting to introduce a variable construct to their personal writing notebooks. Notebook Know-How covers such issues as how to launch the notebook, what mini-lessons can be used throughout the year to help students become more skilled in keeping notebooks?, how to help students having difficulties in transferring their notebook writing to other forms of written expression, how to organize notebooks for flexibility and easy access to information, how to utilize writer notebooks to help students become better readers, and how to properly assess notebooks. Enhanced with lessons, tips, student writing samples, Notebook Know-How is an ideal resource for teachers in grades 3 through 8.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Snippets   September 16, 2007

I heard about this book in a workshop, and decided to check it out for myself. Basically, I did find some good ideas on how to shake up my student's writing folder experience. However, most of the book was something I already knew and did.

I'd suggest this book for new ELA teachers, or ones who are rusty. However, it is always a good idea to keep looking for new ideas no matter how "old and dusty" a teacher you are.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basics on Writer's Notebooks   November 15, 2007

I am torn by this book- the first half was full of ideas and lessons that I felt would help me improve writing instruction. The second half was not, at least for me. The writing is brillant and down-to-earth. Buckner has good ideas and great real world lessons.

The downside for me was the amount of time it would take for me to do everything- the ideas work best for self-contained teachers.

Do I recommend this book? Absolutely.
